Head of the Department Vsevolod Mitsyk, Professor, Doctor of Law

Head of the graduating Chair, Professor. Specialist in international public law, human rights in international law and their international legal protection , international legal responsibility of states, international customs law. Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine. Education: the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Department of International Relations and International Law, 1979. Doctoral dissertation was defended in 2005.

In 1990, the establishment of the Institute of International Relations of Taras Shevchenko National University on the basis of the Faculty of International Relations and International Law was the beginning of a qualitatively new stage in the development of the department. Its professors have made a significant contribution not only to the scientific and pedagogical activity but also to the cause of Ukraine becoming an independent state in the international arena.

The long-time Head of the Department Professor Lukashuk, for many years, was a member of the UN International Law Commission and the Permanent Chamber of the International Court of Arbitration.

During 1982-1992, Professor Butkevych was Vice-President of the Soviet Association of International Law, and in 1993 he was elected as the President of the Ukrainian Association of International Law. In 1994, Butkevych was elected as the People's Deputy of Ukraine and Chairman of the Committee on Human Rights and National Minorities of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. He also played an active role in the work of the Constitutional Commission. Since 1992, Professor Butkevich has worked as a UN human rights expert, since 1996 till 2008 - judge at the European Court of Human Rights.

Vasylenko V. A., one of the leading professors of the Department, in 1988 and 1995-97 was the representative of Ukraine in the UN Commission on Human Rights, a member of the Constitutional Commission, and headed the Ukrainian delegation to the UN Conference on the Law of Treaties in Vienna in 1996. After Ukraine became independent, Professor Vasylenko became one of the leading diplomats of our country. During 1992-1995 he served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg; from 1995-1997 - Ambassador of Special Assignment to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, from 1997-2001 - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United Kingdom. In 2001-2004, Professor Vasylenko served as an ad litem judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

Professor Zadorozhny has been elected twice as People's Deputy of Ukraine - in 1998 and in 2002. From 2000-2002, Zadorozhnyi was a Chairman of the Committee on Legal Policy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, from 2002-2005 - Permanent Representative of the President of Ukraine to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, 2008 - 2010 - Advisor to the Prime Minister of Ukraine. From 1999 till 2017 Professor Zadorozhny was the President of the Ukrainian Association of International Law and Editor-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Journal of International Law, a Member of the Permanent Chamber of the International Court of Arbitration.
Professor V.V. Mytsyk is a renowned human rights expert in Europe. For a long time, he served as a permanent member of the Advisory Committee of the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities (until 2004), and in 2007, Professor V.V. Mytsyk was elected by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe as a member of the Committee of Experts of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages from Ukraine.

The lecturers of the Department are active members of the Ukrainian Association of International Law, which maintains permanent contact and conducts joint activities with national associations of international law of other countries and international non-governmental organizations. The staff of the Department has founded the Ukrainian Journal of International Law and regularly publishes new issues. The Journal considers the main issues of theory and practice of international law. This scientific and practical journal has become a discussion panel for international lawyers, a training ground for working out interesting scientific findings.

The Department has relations with various institutions both in Ukraine and abroad. Students, trained by the lecturers at the Department, repeatedly took honorary places in international competitions in international law, in particular, the Benjamin Telders Competition (the Netherlands) and the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition (USA), Jean-Pictet Competition on International Humanitarian Law (Spain, France). Lecturers and postgraduate students of the Department regularly undergo internships abroad and take part in international scientific conferences.

The Department of International Law has trained more than 100 PhD and Doctors of Law. Nowadays six Doctors and eight PhD are employed within the Department.
